Following the latest trends in fashion is what most people desire, but it is a very expensive hobby since fashion keeps changing. To always be in style means keeping up with fashion trends dictated by the fashion capitals of the world. Sewing and tailoring, viewed either from the aspect of a professional or a beginner, can have multiple benefits since, with some knowledge and creativity, it is very easy to alter an old piece of clothing or make a brand new one. A tailor gives advice regarding garments, supervises and makes them, while following styles, and listening to his clients' wishes and requirements. He advises and helps them when selecting suitable fabrics and fit.
Courses in sewing and tailoring are composed of three parts: beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. All three levels include theoretical and practical instruction. During the theoretical instruction, learners get acquainted with the tools and fabrics used at work, while during the practical instruction they learn techniques for making certain clothing items.
The learners who successfully complete the beginner level will be able to independently use a sewing machine and make tailor's hams. They will be trained to choose suitable fabric, take measurements, make a pattern and transform it into a clothing item. They will also learn to read marks from their patterns, and will be skilled at making various skirt cuts and blouses including all necessary additions. The intermediate level for sewing and tailoring is based on selecting fabrics, making and transferring patterns needed for tailoring of pants, dresses, and vests, whereas the advanced level students learn techniques for making a winter suit (for men or women).
Instruction and length of courses
Each of the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels lasts two months. The learners are placed in group classes for the duration of the theoretical and practical instructions in a classroom specially equipped for tailoring lessons. All necessary tools, materials, and textbooks are provided.
All candidates who successfully pass the final exam will be issued with a certificate as a professional tailor by the Open University.
