Why learn cosmetics?

The first impression of a stranger is formed within the first thirty seconds, often without any conversation. In most cases, physical appearance, the face in particular, is what we notice first. A glowing face is healthy and attractive. Nowadays, more and more men as well as women use various cosmetic products. However, it is very important that along with using high quality products we receive skilled face and body care. A cosmetologist is a person whose task is to adapt proper care and cosmetic products to a certain skin type, in order for the skin to maintain its natural beauty and quality, and to slow down the aging process. There is a wide variety of devices that are available to today's cosmetologists. Using them in face and body treatments results in even better and longer lasting effects.

Learning outcomes
Courses for cosmetologists consist of two parts: beginner and advanced. Both levels include theoretical and practical teaching. Within the theoretical part learners get acquainted with the tools and materials they will be using at work, while the practical part teaches treatment techniques.
Learners who successfully complete the beginner level will be able to determine the skin type of a model and adapt proper care, massage and treatment accordingly. They will also have the skills to properly clean the face and remove imperfections. Applying the acquired knowledge received during the theoretical instructions, the learners will be able to prepare the cosmetic tools and products needed for cosmetic treatments.
The advanced level is the follow-up to the beginner level, so it is required for the learners to have accomplished the basic level or to have practical experience. The learners who successfully complete the advanced level in cosmetology will be skilled in performing facial manual lymphatic drainage which is a special facial massage; they will also be able to properly use the ultrasound peeling machine as part of cosmetic treatment, and to use the right anti-aging masks according to skin types. At the end of the course, learners will be given some basic professional make-up tips.

Both beginner and advanced cosmetology courses last four months each (50 lessons). Learners are placed in groups where the theoretical and practical training are taught at a modern well-equipped salon at the Open University.
