TOEFL® Test of English as a Foreign Language

Within its School of Foreign Language, the Open University introduced the possibility to take TOEFL® iBT exam on March 6, 2006, thus becoming the only institution in Subotica, and one of the three in Serbia qualified as the official TOEFL® iBT testing centres. More than 500 candidates have taken this test at the Open University so far.

TOEFL is a standardised examination tool for evaluating the knowledge of English of non-native speakers. Most universities of the English-speaking world request a TOEFL certificate as a basic prerequisite for enrolment. Moreover, many scholarship programmes use TOEFL scores as one of the criteria for awarding scholarships. 2005 saw the introduction of the new generation of TOEFL tests in test centres worldwide: Internet-Based Test (iBT), i.e. the test is taken online.

Scoring
TOEFL® iBT is scored differently from previous versions of the TOEFL test. The number of points that a candidate can score ranges from 0 to 120. Each section (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) carries between 0 and 30 points. Each task in the Writing and Speaking sections is assessed on a scale from 0 to 5, and then this result is converted so as to express the performance on a scale of 0 to 30 points.

Registration
Candidates register for TOEFL® iBT through the organiser’s web site – www.toefl.org, but also by phone, via the Regional Registration Centre in the Netherlands. The International Academic Centre’s web site (http://www.iacbg.org/.res/File/toefluputstvo.pdf) contains detailed instructions on how to register for the examination. You have to open a free personalised profile on the www.toefl.org site, which will later be used for receiving scores and registration. Telephone registration is done by calling ++31 320 239 540, from 9.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. During the conversation with the operator, you must have the number of your profile in the TOEFL® iBT system, which you received by opening a free profile on the web site. At the end of the procedure, you will need a credit card to confirm registration and book a place.
It is essential to schedule and register the examination on time, because the number of places is limited.

Test schedules
TOEFL® iBT tests are administered several times each month on three locations in Serbia, one of which is in Serbia, and the other two are in Niš and Belgrade. To access the schedule, you click on the "Register" link of the www.toefl.org site, and then choose the testing location on the next page. You will thereby get information on the current situation in terms of available testing locations, by cities of the selected country, as well as the price of testing.
