Culture Defense: the Movement of Cinema Occupation

Eurocinema, free entrance
A group of young filmmakers and students went into the building of the “Zvezda” cinema in Belgrade on 21st November with the aim to revive the premises for film screenings and to return the devastated real estate to the citizens. They named their action “the Movement of Cinema Occupation”. In Belgrade there are no cinemas outside the multiplex system due to the catastrophic privatization of the company “Beograd film”, which resulted in the destroying of 14 cinemas. Couple of ten of cinemas shared the same destiny all over Serbia. As a quick reaction to the “Movement of Cinema Occupation” the cinema “Sloboda” in Kula was also revived.

The movement was backed up by numerous filmmakers and citizens like film director Goran Marković, who added: “the action of these young people has also a symbolic feature. That cinema reminds us of our life: filthy, neglected, cold and closed. They grabbed brooms and vacuum cleaners, and suddenly there was a big crowd in front of the cinema, life started to swirl. I think this is a good sign that young people are fed up with this situation.”
