On Sunday, 21st September at 8 PM on the stage of the Jadran Theatre the 21st International Festival of Children’s Theatres was opened in Subotica. 

The festival programme will end on 26th and during it the most exciting performances for children will be on stage from all over the world. During these 7 days, the city of Subotica will transform into the epicenter of art for children, who will enjoy various additional programmes on the streets and squares of Subotica. There will be 5 exhibitions opened, 2 book promotions, the promotion of authors from the country and the region.


During the official opening ceremony, the selector and director of the Festival of Children’s Theatres will hand over Lifetime Achievement Award “Little Prince” to Geza Balogh, director, screenwriter and theatre professional from Hungary and to Zorica Byford, who will receive the price in name of his late husband Timothy John Byford, director, screenwriter and actor from Great Britain, who with his work contributed to culture in Serbia. Jene Maglai, the Mayor of Subotica and Slavisa Grujic, Provincial Secretary for Culture and Public Information will address the audience, while Geza Balog, the winner of the “Little Prince” award will officially open the festival. The Children’s Choir “Zvoncici” from Novi Sad will perform, along with the members of the cultural organization “Mladost” from Subotica, the Dance Club “Alisa” from Kotor, the clown Arsa from Mars and the youngest band from Subotica “Timebreakers”.


15 performances from 13 countries from the world will go on stage during the festival within the competition programme. The performances are coming from India, Bulgaria, Japan, Montenegro, Estonia, Poland, Romania, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Hungary and two from Serbia: “Is grandpa wearing a suit?” of the Youth Theatre from Novi Sad directed by Emilija Mrdakovic and “Breath” of the Children’s Theatre in Subotica directed by Veselka Kunceva.
There were 230 performances applying for this year’s competition programme from 44 countries.


The performances will be performed on 3 different locations (Children’s Theatre, Jadran stage of the National Theatre and “Kosztolanyi Dezso” Theatre) from Monday 22nd till Friday 26th September. The programme is based on high professional standards, the accent is on diversity of form and approach. Each of the performances is performed on original language and when it comes to selection, puppetry as a theatre expression has advantage.
The focus of this year’s festival will be on Slovene puppetry and theatre art for children, which will be presented through a unique exhibition of 100 years of Slovene puppetry art, publishing and promotion of the book of Edi Majaron “Belief in puppets” in the joint publishing of the Festival and the Theatre Museum of Vojvodina, professional discussion on Slovene puppetry and participation of the Mishmash Bakery of the Mini Theatre from Ljubljana in the official selection of the Festival.
